RMHYC - BAY RIVER CHAPTER
season opener
Th Bay River Chapter season opener, a "Mystery
Dinner", was held May 2nd at the home of Bill and Libby
Ferdinandsen and hosted by the Ferdinandsens and by Roberta and
Larry Jones..
Although partying was, a usual, a serious goal, the
focus of the evening was on the mystery "STORM
SURVIVORS" , about a group of atheletes and assorted
characters (whose roles are assumed by the partygoers) who are
trapped on a tropical island following a cyclone. Ultimately, two
are murdered and everyone, including the dead characters, must
deduce (guess??) who the murderer is.
The following ace gumshoes nailed it correctly:
Larry Jones, Tom Nevison, and (separately) Marilyn Nevison
Best costumes: Darrell Wiard and Nancy Crain (as
Terone Jones and Sapphire)
Best Accent: Peter deVos (as
Ronald Perkins)
Great idea for a party and everyone had a swell
evening

The Bay River Chapter
has had a busy summer.
Following the July 4th weekend Croakerfest Parade, the chapter hosted a
visit from RMHYC Commodore Don van Beck, Rear
Commodores Dave Bluto and Tom O'Brian, and their wives Julia, Barbara and
Nancy. The attached photo shows the officers presenting a huge RMHYC
Burgee to the chapter.

On August 17th Pete and Nancy de Vos hosted a great shipwreck party.
All the members and guests were required to arrive in costumes
representing the 1600s. Tom and Marilyn Nevison, dressed as shipwreck
survivors, won the best costume contest, gaining temporary possession of
the perpetual trophy. This coveted prize, a finely crafted
meteorological instrument, is shown below.
Winners so far:
Best sea story Pete de Vos
Sunfish race Skip Fenner
Costume contest Marilyn and Tom Nevison

The historic inaugural meeting of the Bay
River Chapter of RMHYC .
Held on April 6th at Tom and Marilyn Nevison's cottage.
Members present were:
Alan and Patti Ann Dietrich - Anatine
Skip Fenner - Laura
Bill and Libby Ferdinandsen - Keelin'
Patrick Michaels
Tom and Marilyn Nevison - Wanderbird
Terri Straubmuller - Terri's Delight
Peter and Nancy deVos - Karibu
Darrell Wiard and Nancy Crain - Go Baby
After a social hour Tom Nevison reviewed the current
environment in Marsh Harbour and the Abacos for those who haven't been down
recently (or ever) and the benefits of our group joining RMHYC.
Tom reviewed RMHYC guidelines for the chapters and explained
the revolving door Commodore tradition, i.e. whoever hosted the meeting during
a particular month would be Commodore for that the month. (There will be lots
of Chapter Past Commodores!)
The members agreed that Roberts Rules of Order were strictly
out of order for our group; they then confirmed the suggested nominations for
honorary positions as follows:
Chief Engineering Officers: Alan and
Patti Ann Dietrich
Fleet Commanders, S/V: Skip and Suzan
Fenner
Fleet Commanders, Merchant Vessels: Bill and Libby
Ferdinandsen
Fleet Commanders, M/V: Justus and
Terri Straubmuller
Webmaster: Patrick
Michaels
Bosun's Tom
and Marilyn Nevison
Ministers of external affairs Peter and
Nancy de Vos
Events Directors Darrell
Wiard and Nancy Crain
Libby Ferdinandsen offered to be the Chapter Gofer but declined the position
of Yoeman. Then Commodore (Nevison) mandated that whoever hosted a meeting
in a given month would compile minutes to be forwarded to RMHYC.
The Official RMHYC Port Captains for Bay River, N.C. (not
Merritt - That's our inland Post Office) are: Tom Nevison, Port Captain and
Justus Straubmuller, Alternate Port Captain.
Commodores Darrell/Nancy Wiard/Crain and Skip Fenner will host
the May meeting, at Darrell and Nancy's dock, scheduled for May 23rd. There
will be sunfish racing and basic sailing instruction for the M/V members.
Hopefully no POB drill (person overboard).
The "Business meeting" concluded and members began the Great
Sea Stories Competition. The stories were mostly humerous, some chilling;
all were very good. The runner up was Alan Dietrich with a horror story: "The
Manned Submersible That Went Too Deep". Peter de Vos was voted the
winner with "The Tazania Ambassador's Fishing Trip" (which mysteriously,
inadvertantly but happily ended up not in Tazania, but in Madagascar). Pete
won the coveted prize, a handsome meteorologocal instrument.
