Abaco’s Barometer Bob Passes Away
Long-time weather forecaster Bob Toler a.k.a. Barometer Bob passed away September 8th following a lengthy illness. Listening to his daily weather broadcasts from Blue Dolphin, his Marsh Harbour home, had become a morning ritual among cruisers and local residents. His detailed forecasting was also posted at www.barometerbob.com.
Toler, and his wife Patti, volunteered to help with a local cruising net in the late 80’s after venturing to the Abacos from Solomns Island, MD aboard their Ted Hood 38 Candide. After years of world travel and retiring from the aerospace industry, the Tolers made the Abacos their home, and have become actively involved throughout the community.
Bob was instrumental in the development of the areas Emergency Preparedness Group and formerly served as a Commodore with the Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club.
The Abaco Cruisers Net has continuously broadcast via VHF Ch. 68 since its’ inception in 1990.
On August 21, the inaugural meeting of the Southern Maryland Chapter was held at the home of the Port Captains, Dale and Antha Koonce. The meeting (party) started at 1600 and went on until much later.
To say that a good time was had by all would be putting it mildly. 27 members attended with most coming by car and Mike and Kathy Moore of Cgullseeker arriving by boat.
The menu consisted of hamburgers off of the grill with everyone contributing by bringing a dish. The food was wonderful with everything from hors d'oeuvres to desserts. There may have been some liquid libations also available. When the sun started to go down, we had a conch horn contest to see who could blow the best note.
We are looking forward to our next meeting on October 10 hosted by Ron and Suzie Williams at the Solomon’s Island Yacht Club.
